A dental filling is a treatment used to restore a tooth that has been damaged by decay (a cavity) or minor fractures.

How it works:

When decay forms a hole in a tooth, a dentist removes the decayed portion.
The cleaned space is then filled with a material that seals the tooth and restores its shape and function.
This prevents further decay and helps the tooth stay strong.

Common filling materials include:

Composite resin (tooth-coloured).
Amalgam (silver-coloured metal alloy).
Ceramic (porcelain).
Gold.
Glass ionomer (often used for children or areas below the gumline).
