A dental filling is a treatment used to restore a tooth that has been damaged by decay (a cavity) or minor fractures.

How it works:

  • When decay forms a hole in a tooth, a dentist removes the decayed portion.
  • The cleaned space is then filled with a material that seals the tooth and restores its shape and function.
  • This prevents further decay and helps the tooth stay strong.

Common filling materials include:

  • Composite resin (tooth-coloured).
  • Amalgam (silver-coloured metal alloy).
  • Ceramic (porcelain).
  • Gold.
  • Glass ionomer (often used for children or areas below the gumline).

Disadvantages of White Composite Fillings:

  • Shorter lifespan compared to gold or amalgam in some cases.
  • Technique-sensitive and may require a longer procedure.
  • Can wear down faster under heavy biting pressure.
  • Generally, more expensive than amalgam fillings.
  • Can become stained by coffee, tea, tobacco, or certain foods.
